1A: Navigating the Federal Funding Uncertainty

The nonprofit revenue landscape has had its share of tumult the past five years; though most organizations came out of the Pandemic with increased support and stronger balance sheets than ever before.  While many organizations were planning for a “fiscal cliff” in 2025, as individual donor trends flattened, philanthropy continued to shift priorities, and pandemic-related government sources dried up; the cliff has come faster and looked different than many expected.  During this session hear updates on the current status of government funding most impactful to nonprofits, impacts these changes and uncertainty are having on other funding sources (philanthropic, individual, etc), and discuss what your organization might do to successfully navigate this new landscape.

2B.1 FASB Updates (Jeff Mechanick)

In this session, the FASB’s lead staff member for the not-for-profit (NFP) sector will guide us through the latest developments in GAAP that are noteworthy for NFPs. We’ll discuss new and recent Accounting Standards Updates (ASUs); key implementation matters on recent standards; and select projects in the FASB’s pipeline.  We’ll focus especially on the following:  the FASB’s current agenda and its public agenda consultation; recent and pending ASUs (e.g., Applying CECL to Short-Term Receivables) and ASUs now effective (e.g., Common Control Leasing Arrangements, Crypto Assets); and various current technical agenda and research projects (e.g., Software Development Costs, Intangible Assets). We’ll leave time for Q&A, so please be sure to bring your questions!

•    Describe the key provisions of recent and pending ASUs such as those on Applying CECL to Short-Term Receivables, Common Control Leasing Arrangement, and Crypto Assets, and their applicability to your organization or clients

3A: All About Expenses: Functional Expenses and Beyond

All nonprofits have to track expenses by “function” for external reporting. As an internal accountant for your nonprofit, you might wonder: What does it mean to track expenses by function? Why should we do it? What line items should we track? How can we know what portion of each expense relates to each function? What about indirect costs? How should we document cost allocations? How can functional expenses information help us make management decisions?

 

This session will answer these questions and more. Learn tips on tracking expenses by function, some nuances of preparing the Statement of Functional Expenses, what auditors are looking for, and how you can use functional expense reports as a management tool. We’ll address principles of cost allocation as well as practical applications.

 

We’ll also address the unique treatment of certain types of expenses, like special events, volunteer management, and more. 
This session will help you understand the concepts of cost allocation and expense reporting, as well as provide practical guidance for operationalizing the concepts.
