As ABGi’s National Director of CPA Relationships and Alliances, Matt leads a team responsible for partnering with CPA firms across the country to identify clients that can utilize various specialty tax incentives. Matt works with hundreds of CPA firms across the country and led the firm’s response to Section 174 amortization and its technical implications for ABGi clients. He teaches CPE classes relating to the R&D tax credit, 179D deduction, Section 174 amortization, and has presented on the Future of Tax Incentives. Matt has also spoken at Morgan Lewis’ Research & Development Tax Credit Symposium. Matt has over 20 years in the accounting industry, starting at Grant Thornton, and after leaving, built, and led Internal Audit Departments in both publicly traded and private organizations with revenues ranging from $3 billion to $125 billion. Matt is a CPA and CFE and earned his BS in Finance and Accounting from Indiana University and his MBA in Financial Management and Control from DePaul University.

Donna Powell, CPA, is the Director of the Personal Taxes Division of the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Her primary duty as Director of the Division is the administration of the individual income tax laws of this State. She also advises taxpayers, accountants, lawyers, and other tax professionals on questions regarding the application and interpretation of North Carolina income tax laws. In addition, Donna represents the Department before the North Carolina General Assembly’s Revenue Laws Study Committee, the House Finance Committee, and the Senate Finance Committee.
Donna began working with the Department of Revenue in July 1988 as an auditor in the Corporate Income Tax Division. She received her B.S. (cum laude) and her MBA from Meredith College. In October 2011, Donna completed the North Carolina Certified Public Manager’s Program.

Cale Johnson is currently the Director of the Taxpayer Assistance & Collection Division for the Department of Revenue. He has worked for the Department since 1998 and has served in his current position since 2015. Prior to that, he held a number of leadership positions primarily related to the area of tax compliance. He is originally from Morganton, NC, but has lived in the triangle area since 2005. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Western Carolina University in 1996 and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Appalachian State University in 2003.
