Description

Form 990 may be the IRS’s most revealing—and most exasperating—public facing filing, and Eve Borenstein is back to help practitioners cut through its chaos with clarity, humor, and a healthy dose of irreverence. This combined session brings together the essential groundwork every preparer needs with a deep dive into how to approach and prepare the 990’s underlying “Core Form” and the  three schedules that generate the most confusion: Schedules A, B, and O.

This session will walk participants through the Form 990’s underlying architecture, its often counterintuitive definitions, and the required “preparation sequence” with the goal of keeping preparers sane. Eve demystifies the key concepts behind what makes another organization a “related” one, what must be disclosed regarding the filer’s governance and practices, requirements in identifying managers, other employees, and their compensation (including when those listed need be denoted as having directly or indirectly having other business relationships with the filer, and the underlying data gathering realities that are necessary to support accurate filings. Following thereafter, Eve will then assist preparers in tackling the Form’s “big three” schedules—public support calculations, donor reporting, and the narrative landmines in place within the Schedule O—all to the end of highlighting common misconceptions, sensitive disclosure areas, and practical strategies for getting those three Schedules properly completed.

Designed for preparers, reviewers, and advisors working with exempt organizations, this session equips attendees to understand what the Form 990 is really seeking: the “why’s” behind its disclosure asks, how to prepare a filing that is accurate and complete, and how best to have the Form be reflective of the organization’s story—all to the end of NOT losing your sanity in the process.

Objective

Participants will leave this session able to identify the core structural components of Form 990 and explain the required preparation sequence, determine how the IRS defines “related organizations” and apply those definitions in real‑world contexts, and evaluate governance, management, and compensation disclosure requirements to ensure accurate and complete reporting. They will also be able to prepare key elements of Schedules A, B, and O—including public support tests, donor reporting, and narrative disclosures—while recognizing common misconceptions, sensitive disclosure areas, and data‑gathering challenges that affect Form 990 accuracy. Finally, participants will apply practical strategies to produce a filing that accurately reflects the organization’s activities while maintaining compliance and clarity.
