The CPA Pinnacle Award is regarded as the highest honor bestowed by NCACPA and is awarded at the discretion of the Executive Committee. This award recognizes an individual who has profoundly and significantly influenced the association and CPA profession.
We are proud to announce that the 2021 award was recently presented to D. Scott Showalter, CPA, CGMA, by members of the Board of Directors during their June meeting.
A member since March 2010, Scott has demonstrated an incredible level of service to the association. He has served as chair of four different task forces since 2016: 1) Board of Directors Governance & Effectiveness, 2) NCACPA Vision & Mission, 3) Diversity & Inclusion, and most recently, 4) Committee Restructure Task Force.
Scott has served on the Board of Directors twice. His first term was from 2016–2018. He unselfishly and effectively stepped up to serve as chair of the board immediately following the untimely passing of Bill Ezzell in April 2018. As a personal friend and colleague of Bill’s, having worked together on the AICPA Pathways Commission, Scott indicated it was both an honor and privilege to attempt to carry on Bill’s legacy.
Scott’s second term on the board ended on April 30, 2021, having served in the capacity of chair, past chair, and member.
As current Director of the Master of Accounting Program at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Scott continues to be a major influence in the accounting education sector on a state, national, and international basis. He has been recognized for his teaching excellence by receiving several awards, including the University Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teacher Award and University Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension. Prior to joining NCSU, Scott was an audit partner with KPMG LLP, where he completed his 33-year career in July 2008.
