CPA Evolution
The session on the CPA Evolution will describe one of the most significant changes to the accounting profession since the introduction of the CPA Exam in 1896. After providing an analysis of the changes which will become effective for the CPA Exam in 2024, this session will explore the challenges and opportunities these changes will provide for all professionals in the accounting profession. There will be plenty of time to ask questions.

D. Scott Showalter, CPA, CGMA, CGFM is a professor of practice and the Director of the Master of Accounting Program at the Poole College of Management at NC State University where he has received numerous awards for teaching, research and service excellence. Prior to entering academia, Scott was an audit partner with KPMG LLP, where he completed his 33-year career in July of 2008. He is a member of the AICPA Council and is the past chairman of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board. He joined the North Carolina Association of CPA’s Board of Directors in 2016 and served as the chair 2018-2019. He completed a five-year term as a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board Standing Advisory Group and as a commissioner in the Pathways Commission. He is very active with the American Accounting Association, having served (and currently serving) in various leadership roles. He has written numerous articles on data analytics, consulted with businesses and regulators about the impact of data analytics, and is a frequent speaker on the topic. Scott received his bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Richmond.

This session will provide an overview of the Center for Audit Quality’s Bold Ambition initiative and the related market research on diverse high school and early college students. In addition, the session will discuss the Center for Accounting Diversity’s outreach and engagement efforts in the profession.

Kecia Williams Smith, Ph.D. CPA, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Master of Accountancy (MACC) Program in the Department of Accounting and Finance at North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T). She holds degrees from NC A&T and Texas A&M University, where she completed her PhD in June 2016.
Prior to entering academia, she was a senior manager at Deloitte where she led engagement teams in the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications practice. Immediately prior to starting her doctoral studies, she was an Associate Director at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) where she created and led the Inspections Training Office that served over 400 inspection personnel.

Liz Barentzen is the Vice President, Operations and Talent Initiatives at the Center for Audit Quality, where she oversees day-to-day and long-term strategic operations, as well as leads and advances strategic profession-wide initiatives to attract and retain talent. Previously, Barentzen was the Chief Culture Officer at Sol Systems LLC, a national solar finance, investment and development firm. In that role she worked to drive organizational effectiveness and helped manage change through a rapid period of growth, while overseeing all recruitment, learning, and retention initiatives. Prior to Sol Systems, Barentzen was the Director of Workforce Relations at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, where she served as strategic and legal counsel to management and oversaw training and development, HRIS, benefits, total rewards, HR administration, performance management, and internal investigations. Barentzen has 20 years of experience in Human Capital and is an Associate Certified Coach through the Georgetown Leadership Coaching program. A member of the New York Bar, she holds a JD from Brooklyn Law School and a BA in psychology from New York University.

Assessments and Integrity in Online Learning
This session explores the types of assessments that can be designed in online courses and training to avoid and reduce instances of academic dishonesty. In addition, participants will explore different types of settings that can challenge cheating and plagiarism. Other topics covered in the session include 21st century skills (e.g. creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication) assessments and their relevance in online instruction. As part of this presentation, participants will also discuss the latest trends and technologies in online learning, especially for assessments and academic integrity. Interactive discussions and short games will be part of the presentation to engage participants.

Dr. Miguel (Miko) Nino is Director of Online Learning at University of North Carolina Pembroke (UNCP). He is also Chair of UNC System Online Leadership Collaboration and Communication Chair for the UNC System Faculty and Academic Developers Consortium. He has been in the field of instructional design for 16 years and has worked for institutions like Johns Hopkins University and Virginia Tech. His leadership was instrumental during the COVID19 pandemic, ensuring learning had continuity at UNCP through online learning and emergency remote teaching. As a researcher, his agenda focuses on online learning, digital game-based learning, and ePortfolios. In addition, his work has been published in peer-reviewed journal articles and presented at national and international conferences. As a practitioner, he has coached, trained, and mentored hundreds of faculty members in a wide variety of topics related to online learning and instructional design. He is currently on the editorial review boards for the Journal of Online Learning Research, Contemporary Issues in Teacher Education – General, and the Journal of Technology and Teacher Education. He was President of the Association for Talent Development Valleys of Virginia Chapter from 2017 to 2020.

Tom joined the accounting faculty after a 25-year corporate career. He began his career as an auditor for KPMG and then transitioned to corporate roles including manager of financial planning & analysis, corporate controller, and most recently as the chief financial officer of Cormetech. After completing the sale of Cormetech, Tom decided to pursue his desire to teach and is thrilled to be a member of the NC State community.
Tom received a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Connecticut.
