NORTH CAROLINA CPA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP



Information Application Form for Accounting Students (must be completed online—program opens December 1)

The North Carolina CPA Foundation Inc., was established in 1980 to further the development of accounting education and the accounting profession in North Carolina. The membership of the Foundation is composed of members of the North Carolina Association of CPAs Board of Directors. These scholarships are made possible solely through the generosity of voluntary donations from individual association members, supporting the profession by assisting the next generation.

APPLICATIONS ARE ONLY VALID FOR ONE YEAR. YOU MAY RE-APPLY TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION NEXT YEAR.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a North Carolina resident (minimum of one year) and be enrolled in a North Carolina college or university.
  • Must have completed at least one college or university-level accounting course.
  • Must have completed at least 36 semester hours (or equivalent) by the start of the spring semester of the year of application.
  • Must be enrolled in an academic program leading to a degree in accounting or its equivalent, either currently or during the first semester following the awarding of the scholarship.
  • Academic merit, achievement, and essay:
    1. Must be sponsored by one accounting faculty member who can be contacted by the Foundation through the use of email.
    2. Must have evidence of academic achievement, demonstrated by a grade point average (accounting subjects and overall) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
    3. Must complete an essay on the following topic:
       “As a CPA, how would you educate the public on the importance of financial literacy?"

Your essay must have a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 1,000 words. Any essays outside of the determined word count will be disqualified. The essay will weigh substantially in the scholarship awarding process. The reviewers (association members) will consider grammar, punctuation, organization, style, content, creativity and appropriate references or citations when applicable. Because the reviewers are CPAs, applications should not include information in the essay with which professionals would already be familiar. To assist with the review process, please refrain from using the name of your professors and your college or university. PLEASE PREPARE YOUR ESSAY IN MICROSOFT WORD BEFORE PROCEEDING.

WHAT YOU GET
Scholarship Amounts:
Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 will be awarded annually at the discretion of the Foundation. There is a three-year maximum limit for awards per student.

Free Student Membership:
All qualified applicants automatically will be offered a complimentary one-year membership with the Association.

WEIGHTING OF CATEGORIES
Essay content = 35%
Essay grammar, etc. = 35%
Extracurricular/work activities = 30%

APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND DEADLINE
Applicants must submit transcripts of all course work completed, to include the fall semester of the year of application. Transcripts should be sent directly from Registrar's Office after grades have been posted for the fall semester to:

Application and essay must be completed no later than 2/12/2014 at midnight. Transcripts must be postmarked by 2/10/2014.
