
Membership Classifications
The North Carolina
Association of CPAs offers the following membership categories:
CPA:
A certified public accountant who holds
a valid certificate granted by a state
within the United States.
Associate:
A person employed (or self employed) in the
field of accounting, who meets one of the
following four criteria:

Has applied for and been accepted to take the
Uniform CPA Examination, or passed the Uniform
CPA Examination but whose certificate is being
withheld pending completion of the experience
requirements

Is a professional staff person employed
full-time in an accounting capacity.

Is an individual teaching accounting in an
accredited NC college, university, or
community college on a full-time basis

A former CPA/Fellow member but has opted to
let their certificate go inactive with the
state board
Non-Resident CPA:
A person
who holds a North Carolina certificate but
resides outside North Carolina.
Retired:
A person who has
changed their certificate status to retired with
the NC State Board of Certified Public
Accountant Examiners, no longer works in the
field of accounting, and does not use the CPA
designation.
Senior/Life: A person that has been a
member of the association continuously for 10
years and is 65 years old and retired or the
person is 70 years old. Senior/Life membership is also
extended to an individual who has been a member
of the association continuously for 40 years.
Student:
A
student member classifies as one of the
following:
